Success! What an incredible journey across Wales in a Toyota Mirai for the EV Rally Cymru! Together Chris Foxall and Bill Whyman tackled Wales’ highest peaks and deepest valleys, passing by wind farms, nuclear power stations, reservoirs, and stunning beaches. Chris Foxall said “It was a reminder of the breathtaking beauty of my own country – seeing places I hadn’t experienced before made me feel like a tourist with fresh eyes!”
What truly made the trip special was the fantastic group of organisers and competitors, all united in our goal to promote cleaner, greener ways to travel in Wales. Although Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions didn’t need to rely on the rally’s excellent recharging infrastructure, we used our time at the checkpoints to highlight how hydrogen and battery technologies can complement each other in the push for faster, more effective decarbonisation in transport.
Beyond the sheer relief of making it all the way around, we exceeded expectations! We were the first to reach the final destination at Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council’s Bay Technology Centre, covering 436 miles of challenging terrain with two passengers and luggage to reach the final checkpoint, with 400 miles covered on a single fill. And while it wasn’t a race, we performed well on efficiency, too: 0.8 kg of hydrogen per 100 km (equivalent to about 12 gallons of water). Plus, the Mirai filtered and cleaned approximately 450,000 litres of Welsh air during the journey! Thanks to all our partners for helping make this rally such a success and taking the hydrogen economy to every corner of Wales.
Looking forward to next year, where we hope hydrogen will play an even larger role as its acceptance continues to grow.
