For clean air day this year we’re delighted to be working with Dawsons Property loaning them a Tioyota Mirai for a trial.
Driving Change: Dawsons Trials Hydrogen Car for Clean Air Day
In celebration of Clean Air Day, we’re proud to share news of an exciting step forward in our journey towards a greener Dawsons fleet, our recent trial of a zero-emission hydrogen car provided by Swansea-based innovators Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions.
We were lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the Toyota Mirai, a next-generation hydrogen-powered vehicle that offers a quiet, smooth and surprisingly luxurious driving experience. But what makes this car truly remarkable is what you can’t see, or smell. It emits zero harmful exhaust and goes a step further by actively purifying the air as it drives, helping to remove pollutants from the atmosphere. Clean air, quiet roads, and a glimpse into a cleaner future, what’s not to love?
At Dawsons, we’re proud to already operate a growing number of hybrid vehicles within our fleet, with electric models set to join later this year. Trialling hydrogen technology adds another forward-thinking option to our sustainable transport strategy. It’s part of our wider commitment to reduce our environmental impact while still offering the highest level of service across Swansea and beyond.
We’re thrilled to have linked up with pioneering local companies like Hyppo, who are not just imagining a cleaner future they’re building it right here in Swansea.
Chris Foxall, CEO of Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions, said:
“We’re hugely grateful to Dawsons for the opportunity to showcase the Toyota Mirai in and around Swansea recently. This zero-emission hydrogen vehicle not only produces no harmful exhaust, it actually helps clean the air as it drives, thanks to its built-in air purification system. It’s a fitting tribute to Swansea’s own Sir William Grove, the inventor of the fuel cell nearly 200 years ago. To see his legacy now powering clean transport on the streets of his home city is both inspiring and symbolic of the hydrogen future we’re helping to build together.”
As the UK’s biggest clean air campaign, Clean Air Day reminds us of the power we have as individuals and businesses to make smarter choices that benefit the health of our communities and our planet. At Dawsons, we’re proud to be part of that journey.
Thank you Chris for such an opportunity, we look forward to the future here in Swansea.

Thursday marks Clean Air Day, and what better way to commemorate it than by celebrating innovation that scrubs the air we breathe? This Clean Air Day, Hyppo shines a spotlight on the Toyota Mirai, a zero-emission car that doesn’t just avoid producing polluting emissions; it actively purifies the air thanks to its sophisticated filtration system.
Toyota Motor Corporation’s second-generation Mirai isn’t just about driving without carbon dioxide….it’s designed to deliver “minus emissions.” As the fuel cell draws in oxygen, an electrostatic dust filter captures ultra-fine particles (PM2.5), and a charcoal-mediated chemical filter neutralizes harmful pollutants like sulphur dioxide and NOₓ before releasing clean air back into the environment.
Importantly, every full hydrogen tank (roughly 5.6 kg across three tanks) filters a tremendous volume of air. Toyota engineers estimate each tank processes around 400,000 litres of ambient air, spotlighting Mirai’s real-world impact during daily drives.
Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions’s mission aligns seamlessly with Toyota’s vision: switching to hydrogen-powered fleets isn’t just about avoiding carbon, it’s about healing public health. By showcasing the Mirai on Clean Air Day, Hyppo aims to inspire fleet managers and policymakers to adopt hydrogen technology….not just for transport, but for urban wellbeing.
Wales’s historic ties to hydrogen date back to William Grove—who, in 1839, pioneered the gas electrode fuel cell in his ‘gas voltaic battery.’ His early work laid the foundation for today’s hydrogen fuel cells. Clean Air Day is a fitting tribute to Grove’s legacy, celebrating how far hydrogen technology has come
On this Clean Air Day, Hyppo celebrates how the Toyota Mirai doesn’t just transport people—it cleans the air we share. Combined with Toyota’s hydrogen ecosystem, partnerships with CaetanoBus, and H2Bay’s Welsh infrastructure, we’re entering an era where hydrogen mobility is a pathway to cleaner cities and healthier futures.

The Problem: A Decade-Long Lag
While battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have surged ahead with charging networks sprouting across Europe and North America, hydrogen refuelling infrastructure has lagged behind—by nearly a decade. The reasons are well-documented:
- High CapEx requirements: Traditional hydrogen stations can cost over £1 million each.
- Low utilisation: With few hydrogen vehicles on the road, early stations often see limited use, delaying ROI.
- Regulatory and safety complexity: Hydrogen systems require more rigorous compliance for high-pressure systems and flammable gases.
- Lack of decentralisation: Unlike EV chargers, hydrogen stations have historically required large, fixed infrastructure tied to major suppliers.
This bottleneck has created a chicken and egg situation: vehicle OEMs are hesitant to scale up hydrogen vehicle production due to lack of fuelling options, and investors are reluctant to fund infrastructure without vehicles on the road.
The Hyppo Solution: Fuel, Without the Headache
Hyppo Hydrogen Solutions is shifting the narrative. Rather than requiring operators to invest in costly infrastructure or navigate complex logistics, Hyppo offers a fully managed refuelling service that makes running hydrogen vehicles simple, efficient, and scalable.
With Hyppo, operators get:
- Stress-free operation: We handle the hydrogen logistics, compliance, and maintenance—so customers can focus on running their vehicles.
- On-demand deployment: Refuelling services can be delivered directly to where they’re needed—ports, depots, or even remote sites—without the need for fixed infrastructure.
- Built-in flexibility: Start with short-term trials or limited deployments to test hydrogen in your fleet. Scale up confidently as your needs grow.
- Service-based pricing: No massive upfront investment. Our leasing and service models make hydrogen accessible to operators of all sizes.
Why Now?
The momentum behind hydrogen is accelerating:
- Heavy transport, industrial, and off-road sectors are turning to hydrogen, where batteries can’t meet performance or uptime demands.
- Net Zero deadlines are fast approaching, and hydrogen is essential for decarbonising hard-to-electrify areas.
- Green hydrogen production is going local, with hubs appearing across the UK and Europe—making fuelling more sustainable and cost-effective.
But this progress will stall without infrastructure that’s as agile and forward-thinking as the vehicles themselves. That’s where Hyppo fits in.
A Smarter Way to Deploy Infrastructure
Hyppo isn’t just offering a different kind of technology—it’s enabling a new model of infrastructure delivery:
- No capital lock-in: Customers don’t need to fund or build their own stations.
- Trial-ready: Run pilots and demonstrations without full commitment.
- Local impact: Our Port Talbot facility supports jobs and manufacturing in a region ready for clean growth.
From Bottleneck to Breakthrough
The lack of hydrogen refuelling isn’t just a technical issue—it’s a market barrier. Hyppo is removing that barrier by aligning infrastructure with operator needs, not the other way around.
Hydrogen infrastructure may have started a decade behind—but with Hyppo, it’s catching up fast.
