Green Hydrogen Event Decarbonisation Challenge 2025
The “Green Hydrogen Decarbonisation Challenge 2025” invites students from secondary schools across Wales to design a comprehensive green hydrogen solution to decarbonise a community or large-scale event scheduled in Wales in 2025.
Students must consider how to source the power and water to produce hydrogen, and how to consume the hydrogen produced. The goal is to create a practical, sustainable design that significantly reduces the community’s or event’s carbon footprint through the use of green hydrogen.
Key Components of the Competition
- Community/Event Selection:
- Participants must choose a community or large-scale event taking place in Wales in 2025 to decarbonise. Examples include: Eisteddfod (Cultural event), Music Festivals, Sporting Events (e.g., rugby matches, marathons, golf), Airshows, Agricultural Shows
- Design Requirements:
- Power Supply: Participants must design a green hydrogen system to meet the event’s energy needs.
- Transportation: The solution must include hydrogen-powered transportation options for the community, and in case of event, for audience, spectators, and event suppliers.
- Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Transportation:
- Production: Outline how and where in Wales the green hydrogen should be produced.
- Storage: Detail the storage methods and considerations
- Transportation: Describe how the hydrogen will be transported to the community or event site and how hydrogen vehicles will be refuelled.
- Environmental Impact:
- Teams should estimate the amount of CO2 their design will prevent from entering the atmosphere, compared to conventional fossil fuel-based methods.
Submission Requirements
- Participants: Groups of up to 6 students per team
- Presentation:
- A comprehensive presentation (up to 20 slides) detailing the design, rationale, and calculations supporting the green hydrogen solution.
- Video Introduction:
- A short video (up to 5 minutes) introducing the team and the project. The video should cover:
- Team introduction and roles.
- Project approach and design process.
- A brief description of the main elements of the design.
- A message to the event organisers, highlighting how the solution will help decarbonise the community or event which the team selected.
- A short video (up to 5 minutes) introducing the team and the project. The video should cover:
Competition Timeline
- Registration Deadline: 20th December 2024, at https://forms.gle/sFRMMgfJUm5rbSJz8
- Final Submission Deadline: St. David’s Day (1st March 2025)
- Winner Announcement: 31st March 2025
Prizes
- Grand Prize: An all-expenses-paid trip (details to be announced soon)
Recognition: The winning design will be showcased at a prominent event, and the team will receive certificates and trophies. As an example, in April 2024, the winning team visited London for the day and presented their project to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero in Westminster.
Schools are asked to register before the 20th December 2024, with presentation due by the 1st March 2025.
